About Coves Quay
We are a truly contemporary gallery in the South West, the gallery has now begun a very exciting new phase, as it enters it's twelfth year in Salcombe, in welcoming Greg Ramsden BA SWAC, to become the first artist in residence. Greg has recently been made one of the youngest academicians of the South West Academy of Fine Art.
As from the 1st of April, Greg has been in the gallery and walking the shorelines of Salcombe and the surrounding villages and cliffs, creating new works from the inspiration he has drawn from these treks.
His techniques to create his large works, combine smoke, fire, electrically driven steel brushes and much more. Greg's works are well known and collected in Devon and further afield, over the last year he has completed a considerable amount of commissions as well as running his home gallery and fulfilling his years exhibiting commitments. His work is big bold and full of confidence.
Alongside Greg, Lucy Pratt who has exhibited at the gallery since it first opened it's doors, will continue to exhibit her work, which is highly sort after and is held in many private and public collections both here in England and abroad. Lucy has had an enormous amount of commissions and exhibitions, including having had her work selected for the summer show at the Royal Academy of Arts. Wherever Lucy is, you are sure to find her with a canvas and with a few other works in progress. Some collectors have no less than ten canvasses of Lucy's, ofcourse there is always room for just one more!
Greg is so delighted with his new working studio gallery and the surrounding vistas, which now encompass and combine his new body of work of the sea, estuaries and rivers of the South Hams.
Greg looks forward to meeting new and old faces at the gallery and will be delighted to add you to the mailing list for future exhibitions or for you to make appointments for private viewings.
Greg Ramsden BA SWAc
Greg Ramsden, Painter and Printmaker, trained at Sheffield University (2000-2003). He has since exhibited extensively both Locally and nationally. His work is in numerous private and corporate collections. This year saw Greg become the youngest Academician in the South West Academy of Fine Art.
Ramsden is deeply interested in geology and the natural environment. In his paintings, intricate surface texture and subtle layering reveal direct experience of natural land based environments, including the sea, beaches, rivers, fields and moorlands. Intense observation of nature around him nourishes his fertile memory. It is from this pool of remembered moments and sensations that the paintings emerge. This latest body of work, consisting of large canvases in mixed media exploring themes of ocean, water, land, and there interconnections with the rivers and streams of south Devon. His work vibrates with rich textures a sense of the expansive, the external – an expression of the fragility of human and land relationships and the labour, rhythms and cycles that exist between them.
