| 'I love the gentle and transient light which the English
climate gives us. Coastal scenes offer a wealth of subject matter,
with areas of richness, calm and ever changing reflections. All this
I try to bring to my work, sometimes with more success than others. Making preliminary drawings is for me an important step in creating a painting. It allows me to see the subject in 'my own handwriting' and gives me useful information without excessive detail. Whether I am working in the studio or on location, in whatever medium, the temptation to say too much is always there. My aim is to convey a sense of place and atmosphere, perhaps leaving passages of the painting understated. |
