Mike Healey was the guest artist here at Coves Quay Gallery for 2001, and such was the success of his work with us we have invited him to exhibit here again throughout 2003.

A true painter of the Glasgow School, Mike is a figurative artist whose style and use of colour can be traced back through the flat perspective of Anne Redpath to the vivid pinks of Cadells Iona shores. Essentially a plein air painter, Mike's vivid confident brush strokes successfully capture his direct response to nature and the elements. In his own words "It goes beyond painting...the scents, noises, the wind and the sounds of the sea. All these influences contribute to the act of painting."

Each canvas displays the joy that Mike takes, in what he describes as' the performance of painting.'"The physical action and process of painting gives me great pleasure."

Born in 1951, Mike studied at the Glasgow School of Art in the early 1970's under John Cunningham, winning the Haldane Travelling Scholarship to the United States. Following graduation, Mike lived and worked in Rio de Janeiro as an artist and freelance designer. Returing to Glasgow in the early 1980's Mike was appointed Senior Lecturer at the Glasgow School of Art until 1997 when he resigned from his position in order to focus on painting full time.

Mike has exhibited extensively throughout his career both in his native Scotland and in London and America. His work can be found in many collections Worldwide, notably those of Glasgow School of Art, The Europen Parliament and the Royal Mail.
